Meditation Retreat Introduction
Why learn to meditate?
We practice meditation to reduce the
compulsiveness of our minds. We learn to increase our ability to concentrate
by bringing our awareness inward and holding our attention there focusing
our awareness on the sensations of breathing and relaxing the body. We train
the mind to become quiet and let go of distractions and the constant mind
“babble”. We begin to under stand the workings of the mind and to know
ourselves; we touch our joys and our sorrows. We see those troublesome
habits that run us ragged. This unfolding brings us to experience fully what
is happening right now, right here. In this way we reestablish the natural
order of the mind. We learn to control the mind instead of the mind
controlling us.
The benefits are many. We learn to manage stress. Remain calm and clear headed in all situations, increase our energy, enjoy better health and experience more happiness in our lives. The gift of meditation is no less then the end of pain and suffering and the beginning of a continuous joy filled quality of life.

About Vipassana...
Vipassana Meditation is about learning to quiet the mind and relax the body. We learn to concentrate and control the busy mind instead of having it control us. We learn to be less distracted and more focused on what is happening in the moment, staying more present instead of having our thoughts drift off in many different directions. Everything we do begins with a thought. With meditation we become the observer of our thoughts and improve our ability to decide whether it is best to follow them or not. At the same time we learn to relax the body deeply and let go of stress. With daily practice for a few minutes a day we soon begin to see that we can bring that awareness and calmness into every thing we do throughout the day. We develop the ability to meet all the challenges in life with a calm clear mind instead of an agitated, confused mind. We become more aware of the many choices we have to act upon. We choose actions that are more positive and efficient; our life becomes more joyful and less stressful. We begin to live more from the heart and let go of living in the head. We get in touch with that quiet, wise voice inside of us that always knows what is best but we tend to ignore it or never get quiet and still enough to hear it.
This is the power and gift of meditation
